*I try to get my weekly grocery shopping done every Sunday morning. I like to change it up and go to a few different grocery store each time. When I go to the grocery store, I usually shop on the outside aisles since that is where all of the freshest ingredients are located. By avoiding most of the inner aisles you are avoiding processed and unnatural foods that are most likely not good for your health. Here is a list of where I typically like to shop for my groceries!
#1: Whole Foods- When I need to shop for more things in “bulk,” I like to go to Whole Foods. They have a great variety of beans, rice, grains, oats, nuts, & more to choose from at a reasonable price! They run a ton of great deals on their meat & seafood and always seem to be offering additional coupons to use.
#2: Local Grocer/Farmers Market- When I need more typical grocery items, you can find me at the local Stop & Shop, or a cute local & small grocery store. When I can, I try to shop at a farmer’s markets around the state. Not only does this usually save me money, but you come out with awesome fresh groceries!
#3: Thrive Market- When I am REALLY busy, I like to just shop online. I have an account on Thrive Market which allows me to purchase groceries (nothing fresh) and get them shipped right to my house. I love it because if I know I am running low on things like tomato sauce, pasta, rice, flours, sugars, chips, popcorn, oils and any other baking or cooking ingredients I know I can always get it at a good price from here! I’ll typically do a big haul of ingredients to stock up on from Thrive Market about 2 times a year. You’ll learn more about my EPIC stockpile as the days go on.
Here’s a list of my weekly grocery staples!
Weekly Grocery Staple # 1: Eggs (Free Range/Cage Free)
*I usually buy about 2 dozen eggs at a time. I like to have some on hand all through the week for baking recipes and for breakfast. I usually make about 8 hard boiled eggs when I meal prep on Sundays, so 2 dozen eggs can go pretty quickly. Fresh eggs from the farmers markets are the best… you can totally taste the difference!
Weekly Grocery Staple # 2: Almond & Cashew Milk (unsweetened)
*For me this is a MUST. My husband and I both use these throughout the week for things like protein shakes, smoothies, overnight oats and even some baking recipes. Unsweetened/unflavored is definitely best because you don’t want any unwanted added sugars.
Weekly Grocery Staple # 3: Bananas (Lots)
*About once a month, I will buy a few bundles of bananas to use for the upcoming week and also to freeze. I like to slice up a few bananas and freeze them to have as a cool snack. I also will cut the bananas into smaller chunks and freeze them in a Ziploc bag to have ready for smoothies, ice cream, and any other treat that might require it!
Weekly Grocery Staple # 4: Spinach/Salad Mix/Romaine or Boston Lettuce/Juicing Greens
*Spinach in my house is a must! I love how versatile it is and how great it is for your body. I’ll throw some spinach in a smoothie, make a tasty salad, use it for a fresh juice, or serve it sauteed with any yummy dish!
*The salad mix is also great to have if you ever need a quick way to fit your veggies in for that day! The juicing greens are so delicious in a smoothie or juice, especially when mixed with a fresh fruit to give it an added sweet flavor.
*The romaine lettuce or Boston lettuce is great to have to when making any kind of “wrap” without the carbs! Asian lettuce wraps is a favorite of mine for this! I also love to grill my romaine lettuce! It adds such great flavors.
Weekly Grocery Staple # 5: Hummus
*My husband and I LOVE hummus as a snack. We tend to have it with fresh veggies (cukes & carrots mostly), but will throw in some gluten free tortilla chips when we want something a little more fun! Hummus is also super easy to make yourself and you can save some money by making it right at home!
Weekly Grocery Staple # 6: Fresh Veggies (cucumber, avocado, carrots, celery, broccoli, peppers, zucchini, onions, and garlic)
*It always pays off when you have lots of veggies on hand throughout the week. Prep some veggies by peeling and slicing some carrots, cucumbers, and celery having them ready to grab at any point in the week when you need a quick and healthy snack! Having other veggies ready to be used for recipes throughout the week also makes life a whole more manageable. Having zucchini on hand is also a great alternative to pasta when you are able to whip up some fresh zoodles! Having an avocado at home is also a great way to add a bit of healthy fat to a meal when you are strapped for time! Add it to a salad, or with an egg for your breakfast, or use it as a spread in a sandwich in place of mayonnaise!
Weekly Grocery Staple # 7: Fresh Fruit (apples, lemons, oranges, and whatever else is in season!)
*Shop for what is in season and you’ll get better deals and better quality fruit! Prep your fruit at the start of the week (cut up and have ready) to have healthy snacks on hand whenever you want something sweet! I also like to get a little extra fruit to use for juicing and also to have to infuse my water!
Weekly Grocery Staple # 8: Meat/Fish
*Typically, I’ll buy chicken (regular or ground), ground turkey, and chicken sausage. I like to buy fresh fish from the local seafood market the day or day before I want it to make sure it is perfectly fresh! We eat red meat maybe two times a month and when we do, we love a nice steak!
Weekly Grocery Staple # 9: Sweet Potatoes
*We cannot live without sweet potatoes! We incorporate them in our meals at least 2 times a week. They are so easy to whip up to add to any dish or to throw into a recipe when baking or cooking!
Weekly Grocery Staple # 10: Butternut Squash OR Spaghetti Squash
*Squash is so yummy! Butternut squash is great to make a sauce or soup… it had loads of flavor!!! Butternut squash noodles and spaghetti squash are both very tasty alternatives to regular pasta. They can be stored in the pantry for about a month which makes it easier if you find it on sale and can buy a few of each. 🙂
